What Do You Need That First Night Home

The first night in your new home may feel a little empty. If your household goods haven’t arrived yet, you may be waiting on everything that you’re used to having. Here are a few things that we’ve learned are must have through our personal experiences and many PCS moves!

Toiletries: I don’t just mean the obvious (toothbrush, hair brush, soap) but the ones that go along with those. I’m talking shower curtains and rods, towels, a first aid kit. It would be a big bummer to be driving or flying all day, arrive in your new home, to realize you can’t shower that evening!

Clothes: So you don’t have to dig through all your boxes right away, pack 2-3 days worth of clothes and pajamas.

Air mattress/bedding: With your household goods still en route, an air mattress is going to be a great purchase to keep you sleeping soundly until everything arrives. PRO TIP: If you’ll be without furniture for a while, Amazon sells inflatable couches that look more comfortable than the ones that were popular in the 90s. And don’t forget to bring sheets, pillows, and blankets!

Electronics: Make sure none of your chargers get packed! And have back ups stored away in case they somehow do. You’ll need them for your phone, iPad, laptop, etc. Make sure you have cords for your television so those don’t get lost as well.

Cooking and eating utensils: Bring things you know you’ll use, such as the pot or pan you cook with most, a couple spatulas or spoons, a cutting board and knife. Use disposable utensils and plates until your real ones come in if you prefer to have less clean up. Pack some garbage bags to make sure you have somewhere to put your waste.
